Hampshire Down.
The Hampshire Down breed originated in Hampshire in Southern England. The breeds origins in Australia can be traced to the early 1860’s, and maintained a presence to the 1980’s as a terminal sire breed within Australia. The breed has dwindled partly due to its black face, which was a black fibre risk in a sheep industry focused on producing premium white wool. The breed slipped into rare breed status in Australia as it came to the new millennium and maintained the rare breed listing until 2019 when an increase in numbers started to occur.
Kinross Station worked to benchmark the breed for marbling by testing a wide diversity of bloodlines between 2016 and 2019. The breed on average is on par with mainstream breeds for marbling, however Kinross Station identified a few flocks with a marbling strain unparalleled in the world sheep flock. It’s this trait, combined with growth and muscle, that has seen the breed take a forward step within Australia.
